Fishadelphia’s first pick up!
Fishadelphia held its first fish pick up on Friday, February 9th! (Rescheduled from Thu due to the Eagles parade – go Philly!) We sold 70 lbs of squid to 21 customers. Yum.
Plus, WHYY came to the pick up and did a nice radio piece!

- Dan Radel wrote a nice piece about Fishadelphia in the Asbury Park Press (Feb 5, 2018): New fish trade starts between Jersey Shore and South Philly.
- Billy Penn gave a Fishadelphia a shout-out (Feb 6, 2018): South Philly high school students started a new seafood CSA: ‘Fishadelphia’ offers biweekly fresh fish deliveries from the Jersey Shore.
- Jason Sheehan highlighted Fishadelphia in Philly Magazine’s food blog Foobooz (Feb 6, 2018): Fishadelphia is Philly’s new sustainable seafood CSA, which in turn got a shoutout from Saving Seafood: Fishadelphia is Philly’s new sustainable seafood CSA.
- Avi Wolfman-Arent from WHYY came to the first pick up and put together an awesome radio piece on Fishadelphia: Philadelphia’s new spot for fresh fish is in a school?

Fishadelphia is up and running!
Fishadelphia – our student-run community-supported fishery (CSF) program aimed at connecting harvesters in NJ with diverse consumers in Philadelphia – is up and running! Our pilot season will start Feb 8, 2018, and involve 8 shipments of fish, one every other week. Sign-ups start Dec 1, 2017! Check out our web site and our flyers below.

CSF focus groups!
This spring, students at Mastery Charter Thomas Campus planned and ran two focus groups for community members to determine fish preferences. Students asked the focus group participants what kind of fish they would be interested in purchasing, what prices they would be willing to pay, and whether they were interested in whole fish, fillets, or both. Students live-interpreted into four languages (Pashtun, Chin, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish). Participants were interested in a range of species, and some were interested primarily in whole fish, while others were interested primarily in fillets.
A summary report of the focus group results will be available soon!
West coast trip to talk with CSFs and fish markets!
I’ve just returned from two weeks on the west coast meeting with community-supported fishery programs, fish markets, and other people engaged in alternative distribution chains. Big thanks to all the people who kindly sat down and chatted with me, including Jeff Wong from Community Supported Fishery in Garibaldi, OR, Rob Taylor at West Coast Clams, Aaron Longton from Port Orford Sustainable Seafood, Leesa Cobb from the Port Orford Ocean Resource Team, Larry Collins from the San Francisco Community Fishing Association, Alan Lovewell and the whole crew from Real Good Fish in Moss Landing, CA, Sarah Rathbone from Santa Barbara Community Seafood and Dock-to-Dish LA, and Pete Halmay, Luke Halmay, Kevin Fukushima, and other folks at the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market!

USDA grant for CSF!
We were awarded a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP) grant ($265,000) to start a community-supported fishery (CSF) program connecting harvesters on the NJ shore with a diverse community of consumers in Philadelphia!
